Comment: Gagosian's iPad app consists of downloadable in-app issues. Each issue feature the work of a number of Gagosian artists. Issue 4 has a great feature about Taryn Simon's work, for example detailed and interactive views of Contraband and A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters. There's also texts, detailed info about the works, installation views, videos and much more to be found. In issue #4 there's also a good feature on Thomas Ruff.

Carol Golemboski's Psychometry App on TV

Carol Golemboski's Psychometry app has made it to the local (Denver, Colorado) news. Have a look at the embedded video from FOX31 Denver. There's another video about the app at 9NEWS, and also have a look my previous post about her Psychometry clamshell box.

The Afronauts by Cristina De Middel - Preview and book/app comparison

I've been able to preview the upcoming "The Afronauts" App by Cristina De Middel and Ubicuo Studio for two days. The book the app is based on got a lot of attention, sold out quickly and is now out of reach for most people. Cristina didn't want to print a second edition of the book, and instead decided to make an app to make the work more accessible.

Many are familiar with the book so I decided to post some comparison samples between the book and the app.

The app will be compatible with both iPad and iPhone, and will launch on April 17th costing €5.99.

Carol Golemboski's Psychometry clamshell box

Carol Golemboski recently released the Psycometry iPad App. She has also produced a custom clamshell box to fit an iPad with the app installed. Below she explains the idea behind it.

"I had an idea to create a “traveling iPad” that I could load with the Psychometry app and send to galleries for display. It also serves as a good vehicle to introduce the app at art fairs such as the AIPAD Show at the Park Avenue Armory in New York, where it will be on display in the Robert Klein Gallery booth from April 4th-7th.

The box is designed to resemble a beautiful clothbound book when closed, and allow viewers to experience the app when open. I came across the website of Kristin Dunn Bookbinding and Design and thought her “Portfolio Box for iPad” provided the perfect starting point. I worked with Roxanne Davison, lead designer at Brainchild Blueprints, to provide instructions for Kristin to create this custom clamshell box. It not only opens like a book, but can be propped up to view in an upright position. It was the perfect solution to link my digital photobook to a physical photobook."


About the App

Psychometry is an interactive artist’s book that entices viewers to explore the haunting imagery of photographer Carol Golemboski. Comment: "DPR House" is one of the new apps from digital architecture publisher Outcast Editions. It contains text, photographs, a video and lots of drawings of floor plans and details. I'm by no means an architecture expert, but I like the architectural photographs by Richard Glover and I think that the rendered drawings look very good. The navigation and design is superb, and might be one of the best I've personally seen. The photos are very crisp and detailed on the retina display, but I wish that the nicely captured video was of a bit higher resolution. I also wish that you could swipe between pages and could hide the navigation at the bottom, but apart from this it works very well and the captioning works brilliantly.

"DPR House" is not an app with narrative as in the photobooks we're used to look at, and is clearly aimed at an architecture audience. I'm sure the target audience will be very happy with the app though, and I must admit it's hard to not get drawn in by the place, environment and architecture.
